WHAT’S HAPPENING WITH THE ESSC

With the change in government there has been a lot of activity in the world of emergency services, not the least of which are a number of collective bargaining agreements in the policing sector, which we are sure will be a lively topic of debate at our ESSC Labour Forum on June 7th. This will be complemented by a discussion concerning the implementation of the Police Services Act, 2019.

If you have not registered yet for the Labour Forum, you can do so by emailing mmackenzie@esscontario.ca.

In terms of paramedic services, the Ontario government has advised the Association of Municipalities of Ontario (AMO) that it intends to restructure paramedic services in Ontario. The ESSC has been advocating for improvements to land ambulance dispatch technology and expanding the scope of practice for paramedics for some time. Both of these initiatives are part of the government’s recent announcement, and we have every expectation these improvements will result in more coordinated care for Ontarians needing emergency medical care.

Work is ongoing with the Fire Working Group and we are pleased with the support we are receiving from our municipal partners, AMO, OMHRA and the Ontario Association of Fire Chiefs (OAFC). Results from the group will be presented to members this fall and will support fire employers as they engage in bargaining and arbitration under the new legislation.

Our membership continues to grow, and we encourage all municipal employers to join in the discussion. For membership information please contact our Project Manager at mmackenzie@esscontario.ca.
